Your
Host:
J. Bernard Tate grew up just down the road at
Elmo where his parents ran the country store for forty-five years prior
to their retirement. He worked in a four star restaurant in Colonial
Williamsburg with international chefs. He is familiar with regional
cooking and was certified by the University of Florida as a dietary manager
in March of 1988.
The House:
The original portion, which is the back wing, was built circa
1740 of hand-hewn logs. The new wing up front was added in 1766. In the
restoration of 1995 the entire house was modernized including six tons
of heat pumps for year round comfort. The house was occupied by six
generations of Patrick Henry descendants and is certified for inclusion
in the Virginia Register of Historic sites. All rooms are furnished
in period antique pieces from River Road Antiques and all, except the
family pieces, are for sale.
