13 displaced after fire at Denbigh town houses

NEWPORT NEWS -- Ten adults and three children who live at Windsor Pines Way, a town house complex in Denbigh, safely escaped their homes Wednesday after a fire sent smoke and flames through several units.

A resident reported the fire at 5:42 p.m. It took firefighters about 90 minutes to control the blaze, said Dana Perry, of the Newport News Fire Department.

The fire started in one of the two-story town houses in C building, and spread to at least one other, Perry said. Dominion Virginia Power cut off electricity to other homes, which forced some residents to leave.

One of the displaced adults was a woman from New York who is to be married here this weekend, Perry said. The woman had been staying with friends until the wedding. The bride-to-be saved the wedding dress from the smoke, Perry said.

As of 9 p.m., investigators had not determined the cause. The complex is off Jefferson Avenue, between Denbigh Boulevard and Richneck Road.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting.
