Jesse Meeler’s Growing Up in the Depression Years.
The Dan River Atlas: Rediscovering River History on the Dan, Smith’s and Banister.
14th Virginia Infantry and 3rd Virginia Cavalry, which together cover nine Halifax County companies of troops. An additional book on the era, Gage’s Southside Virginia in the Civil War, is also available.

Text Box: Back Then—Those Were the Days
Recollections of a Boy Growing Up
During the Depression
by Donald Hook

In conjunction with the museum’s exhibit, The Great Depression, we are offering for sale in our gift shop an informative book retelling one man’s memories of life during the depression. Dr. Hook is the author and co-author of many books on various subjects. His educational background includes attendance at five U.S. universities. This book is available for sale in our gift shop.

From the Author:

The events and people in this book are centered in a small city called Lynchburg, in the southwestern part of Virginia. The time is that of the Great Depression, the years 1929 to 1939, with a carryover through the years of World War II. The experiences are my own, born in the 1920s and growing up in Lynchburg during the 1930s and 1940s. This book represents the experiences of many who grew up throughout the United States and elsewhere in the western world in those crucial years.

There have been periods of boom and bust throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the recurring market uncertainties of the 21st century, but nothing has equaled the long term effects of the Great Depression. Not to be overlooked is the dreadful weather throughout that decade—frigid, snowy winters, unbearable heat, drought, floods, and grasshoppers.

Back Then - Those Were the Days is conceived for an audience of pre-teens, their parents and grandparents. Although set in a small southern city, the facts and circumstances are applicable to many U.S. towns and cities during the Great Depression.

Text Box: In Honor and Remembrance

On September 11, 2003, the Woodmen Lodge 106 conducted a special ceremony to honor and remember the heroes of September 11, 2001, and to say “thank you” to the men and women who safeguard our communities every day. The Woodmen of the World dedicated the flag pole, that they gave to the museum, and presented us an American flag. The Public Works Department of the Town of South Boston erected the flagpole, the Woodmen placed a bronze plaque honoring our fallen heroes, and South Boston Marble and Granite Memorials donated a marble stone honoring the occasion. We extend our grateful thanks to all.
