As anyone who has ever tried to trace their
ancestors knows what a difficult task this can be with questioning relatives,
checking records and then sorting fact from fiction. This is the ultimate jigsaw
puzzle and a never ending labor of love. My grandfather, John Winter Hinde was
born in England, on the Isle of Portland in
the county of Dorset. Portland is not technically an "island"
as it's connected to the mainland by a large causeway of pebbles. The island
is approximately 2 miles wide and 4 miles long.... this may have explained why
John found himself in Key West, Florida, which is almost the same size as Portland.
Since I started my research three years ago, I have collected
over 1600 names and reconnected with relatives that I hadn't seen in 30 years.
I've also met or made contact with other relatives here in the states, England,
Canada and Australia. Enter here to view a list of
HINDE family members showing their dates of birth, christening, marriages, deaths,
spouses and the burial site at St. Georges Church.

John was born March 20, 1862 and arrived in Key West in 1880. There he married
a local girl, Eliza Saunders, on January 20, 1885. This union produced
11 children with the first born in 1886 and the last in 1913. Below is a list
of the children with their dates of birth and deaths. Children of John and Eliza:
