Sidebar on Special (non-C/D) LIMsIn addition to the C/D LIMs, every army has two special LIMs, "Orders" and "Strategic Movement." The French also have two additional LIMs available only to them, "Artillery" and "Grand Battery." The first of the special LIMs available to each army is the "Strategic Movement" LIM. This LIM allows eligible units to double their movement allowance if they stay far enough from enemy units and, in contrast to such movement under a C/D LIM, does *not* require the moving unit to stay on roads or paths. The second special LIM possessed by all armies, the "Orders LIM," is a kind of wild card that allows a player to choose one option among (a) moving all his leaders; (b) moving any one unit regardless of whether it has moved before; or (c) rolling a die to see if a command whose LIM is *not* in The Pool may immediately pretend that its LIM has been placed in The Pool and drawn. This last effort is known as "Attempted Activation." If you fail in your attempt, the relevant command can do exactly nothing in this and all subsequent phases in the turn. The Orders LIM, by the way, is placed in The Pool *without* the need to expend a Command Point. There are also two non-C/D LIMs available only to the French player. The "French Artillery" LIM allows all French artillery units within the command range of the chosen French artillery commander (there are two from which to choose) to fire and move in their own LIM. The "Grand Battery" LIM is available only in the Mount-St. Jean and June 18th scenarios. It should thus really have had its relevant rules placed in the Scenario Book, but it was apparently too gleaming a bit of chrome to leave out of the regular Rulebook. This LIM does not allow artillery *movement*, but but it does allow artillery *fire* by all units within command range of a chosen artillery commander, of which the French have two. Grand Battery fire has two advantages. First, in contrast to the usual rule allowing artillery to combine fire only when in the same hex, Grand Battery fire allows scattered artillery units to combine their fire so long as they bombard the same target. Second, artillery strength is *tripled* in Grand Battery fire. (The Grand Battery LIM is the only LIM, by the way, that cannot be chosen turn after turn after turn; the Grand Battery LIM may only be chosen two turns in a row, and it must stay out of The Pool two turns for every turn it was used.) |
