The living rules do not indicate in any way how they differ from the original,
presumably now-zombified rules, and (as of May 31, 1999) the living rules include a footer
on every page that calls them "an entirely unauthorized revision." So I
e-mailed Gene Billingsley and Bill Ramsay. Both rapidly replied, with the following
helpful information.
The reason I did this rules set was mostly because I felt that there was a terrific
game in here, but it was very difficult to 'get at'. The changes made were not entirely
cosmetic or organizational.
1. I changed the rules to use an A-B-C-D type of paragraph numbering after third level
outline headers.
2. I moved all the counter diagrams off onto a Corel Draw sheet that had the same
information, but more easily referenced.
3. I modified the terminology used for movement as follows:
Restricted Tactical Movement became Road Tactical Movement
Unrestricted Strategic Movement became Strategic Movement
Restricted Strategic Movement became Road Strategic Movement
Reduced Movement became either Combat Movement and Out of Command Movement
By changing the terms to 'Road' instead of 'Restricted/Unrestricted', it made it easier
for me to visualize the type of movement being performed. The addition of Out of Command
Movement, which is identical to Combat (formerly Reduced) movement with the exception of
the ability to enter ZOCs, also made it easier (for me).
4. I incorporated all the errata from Genie (at the time), then from C3I.
5. I removed all the rules cross-references that referred to specific rule numbers
(this is a personal thing, I find them distracting and not particularly helpful. If the
reference says 'See the Grand Battery rule', that works for me).
6. Sections 5, 6 and 7 were rearranged from Movement/Facing-ZOC/Stacking to
Facing-ZOC/Stacking/Movement.
7. The Stacking and Unit Extension section was reorganized to include major headings of
Stacking Limits, Extended Lines and Extended Columns, rather than Stacking Limits,
Stacking and Movement, Stacking and Combat, Extended Lines, Extended Columns.
8. The Movement section was reorganized to first feature the movement types available,
then Terrain and Movement, then enemy units and movement, then reinforcement movement.
9. The Artillery LOS rules were reworked to make them easier for me to use (I'm one of
those people Richard was addressing in his Grumpy Design/Play Note).
10. The Assault Rules were reorganized to more clearly differentiate between types of
assault combat and the sequencing of it.
11. The optional rules for Cavalry Pursuit (12.1) and Cavalry Impetuosity (12.2) have
been moved to the Combat section, as rules sections 8.68 and 8.69 respectively. This
reflects my prejudice against optional rules being ganged up in the back of the rulebook,
and nothing more.
12. I changed the terminology from Chateau IDS (Intrinsic Defense Strength) to CID
(Chateau Intrinsic Defense) Strength, mainly to make it easier to refer to the Chateau's
"defense" as an entity separate from its strength.
13. Section 9, Combat Results was reorganized to make it easier to determine what
exactly happened as a result of combat. Rally and Recovery rules were moved to section 10,
Morale.
14. I removed the Optional Reassignment of Units rules(12.3), mainly because of
Richard's statement in the Play Note that these were ahistorical.
This is a fairly complete outline of the changes I made to the rules. The charts and
tables changes are as follows:
1. I divided the charts into five sections (I know this isn't easier production-wise
than the double sized, folded chart you provided, but I need the extra space).
2. The Morale, Rally and Disorder Chart contains all that type of information, along
with a summary of the effects of D-1/D-2 and Rout.
3. The Fire Combat Chart includes the Fire Table, Column Shifts, DRMs and Info re:
Grand Battery fire and Leader Casualties.
4. The Shock Table has been changed only to make the modifiers easier to determine.
5. The Movement Chart contains the Terrain Chart, plus information on movement rates,
ZOCs and stacking.
6. I added a Combat Results Matrix Chart that shows the potential additive results of
combat.
Those are the changes I made. As I stated in my letter to Gene, I loved the game, and
really wanted to make it easier for me to play (since the people I play with are inclined
to eschew games of greater than average difficulty).
Regards,
Bill
