As to style and format: To keep things simple, authors are in bold face. Titles are only cited when they help color the quote, and they appear in italics. Text ellipses, editing, and your correspondent's clarifying comments are shown in [brackets]. Though the Matrix cites many authors and texts repeatedly, it abjurs the abbreviations id., ibid., infra., and supra. While these may simplify ordinary footnotes, they become a positive nuisance when skipping about from one Webpage to another. About sources: The Quote Matrix omits editors, editions, page numbers and dates unless needed for the sense of the text; nor are translators noted unless the translation itself is at issue. That is for two reasons. First, it reduces the temptation some students may feel to steal quotes for their papers without doing their own research. And second, it avoids tempting lawyers to pester your correspondent with nastygrams and lawsuits. Although the Quotes Matrix enjoys the protection of the educational Fair Use Doctrine under the copyright laws, the boundaries of that protection are so indistinct that it is best not to be too specific about what came from where. If there are questions, suggestions or comments please contact your correspondent.
