Opening lines of the Holy Gospel According to John.

The Greek is usually translated (in the King James version): "In the begining was the Word, and the Word was with God, and theWord was God . . . " The Greek word logos translated as "word" however, connotes both speech and reason. It is the root of our English "logic" and all the terms ending in "ology" like "biology" (thinking and talking about life) "geology" (thinking and talking about the earth), and even astrology (thinking and talking about the influence of the stars.) To the Greeks, the ability to articulate was inextricably bound up with the ability to think.
