Country Cottage Tea Cosy

Feel free to share these directions and designs. -Susanne Glass 11/1/96

Notes: these directions are for a tea cosy in the shape of a country cottage. The main part is done as a wide piece. Half the stitches are then scrapped off. The remaining stitches are shortrowed like the toe of a sock (this forms the roof of the house) and joined to the scrapped off stitches. The side seam is then joined. The pattern needs 8 repeats of the design so it must be punched as a split motif in order to get 8 full repeats on machine. The accompanying punch card pattern is punched in reverse for use on a single-bed four color changer. For a door, cancel the flower under one of the windows and cancel the outside vertical line (stitches 54 and 66 on right side) around the window (this makes the window narrower so it more resembles a door). Later duplicate stitch the door line down to the bottom of the house and stitch in a door knob. For the roof pattern use a standard 1x1 Birdseye (Brother punch card #1).

Special notes for punchcard for house: On my machine the pattern starts on row 3 of the punchcard. Starting on pattern row 3 cancel the flower where the door will be. At pattern row 13 pull out needles 54 and 66 right of center O to UWP (using color changer). Stop pulling needles at pattern row 24. Color changes (using color changer) for house and flowers: MC is red; CC: punchcard row 3 - green; 7 - yellow; 11 - cancel; 13 - black; 45 - cancel; 47 - green; 49- cancel.

Yarn: any 2/8 wool or equivalent. Tension: 6.1. Gauge: 8 stitches, 10 rows per inch.

Cast on 193 stitches (97-0-96) with scrap yarn. This extra stitch should help the pattern match at the seam (this extra stitch will be decreased later). A plain hem is used here since it is more sturdy than a rib and stands up better. Change to green main yarn. RC000. T9 knit 1 row. T3.1 knit 9 rows. T9 knit 1 row. T3.1 knit 9 rows. T9 knit 1 row. Hang hem. T10 knit 1 row. Carriage at left to use 4-color changer.

RC000. Change to main yarn for house (red) and set color changer for fair isle knitting (this takes 2 rows of main color alone). T6.1 knit 48 rows of pattern (don't forget to adjust for door). RC050. End carriage at left. Decrease 1 stitch at left side. Remove four-color changer and replace regular carriage. Pull 96 stitches right of Center 0 into Hold. Scrap off 96 stitches on left.

RC000. Set machine to roof pattern and change to roof colors (black and gray). Short row until 15 stitches are in Hold on each side. (To short row, pull 1 stitch carriage side into hold. Knit 1 row. Repeat these 2 rows). RC030. Pull stitch in hold on opposite side into UWP. Knit across. Repeat these 2 rows until all stitches are again in working position. Scrap off on waste yarn.

Hang scrapped off stitches, right sides facing, back on the needles with the back piece stitches behind the latches and the front piece stitches in the hooks. With pusher move the needles from holding position to working position, which knits the front stitches through. Latch tool cast off. Join side seam. For loop holder cast on 3 stiches and knit 50 rows. Cast off. Attach to top of roof (pretend its a chimney).
