Ribbed Neckline with Casing over Neck Edge

(suitable for cut and sew or shaped necklines)

  1. Complete garment neck edge according to your directions.  For pullovers sew one shoulder seam and remove from machine.  Determine number of stitches for neckband.
  2. Knit back side of casing (will be on wrong side of sweater) for neckband as follows:  Knit several rows of waste yarn and one row of ravel cord, ending with carriage at right.  Change to main yarn and tension two whole numbers less than main tension.  Knit 6 rows.  Take off on garter bar or waste yarn.
  3. Knit ribbed neckline as follows:  Knit ribbing of your choice for 10-12 rows.  Transfer ribber stitches to main bed.   Leave ribbing on machine and do not cut yarn.  Pull all needles out to E position and push stitches behind latches.
  4. Knit front side of casing (will show on right side of sweater) as follows:  Hang stitches from garter bar or waste yarn on machine and push behind latches.  You should have both these stitches and stitches from ribbing on the needles.  Knit 6 rows at main tension minus two whole numbers.  Take off on garter bar or waste yarn.  Do not cut yarn.
  5. Place garment neck edge on needles with right side facing you.  Pull needles to E position and push stitches behind latches.
  6. Optional: Take a separate piece of yarn and e-wrap loosely across the needles behind the latches but in front of neck edge.  This will make a defining line of stitches between garment and neckband.  Continue as usual.
  7. Hang stitches from garter bar or waste on these same needles.  Leave these stitches in the needle hooks.  Close the latches and pull these stitches through the neck edge.
  8. Rehang stitches from above the ravel cord.  Bind off.  Remove ravel cord.

Alternate method (cut and sew only)

Follow steps 1-4 above but do not remove from machine.  Push needles to E position and push neckband behind latches.

5.               Place garment neck edge through the needles – right side of garment facing the ceiling and cut edge toward you.  Garment will be on top of needle bed.  Leave ¼” seam allowance.  Push fabric behind latches.

6.               Push needles back slightly.  Hang stitches from ravel cord.  Push stitches behind latches.

7.               With a separate piece of yarn (or yarn attached to neckband), hand knit each stitch so that each needle is pushed back between positions A and B.

8.               Slip crochet bind off.  Remove ravel cord.
