Easy Adult Mittens [by Susanne Glass 1/17/00]

General mitten calculations:
Measure around the palm = [A]
Then add 1" if fairisle = [B]
Hand length (wrist to fingertip) = [C]
(Hand length will normally be same as palm before adding ease)
Start thumb at 1/3 of C (hand length) = [D]
Thumb length is 1/3 of C = [D]
Take off 1.5" for thumb [E=1.5]
Stitch gauge = [F]
Row gauge = [G]
[Round off following to whole numbers as appropriate.]
Total stitches to cast on equals A (or B if fairisle) x F minus 1 = [H]
Total rows to knit (not incl. ribbing) equals C x G = [I]
Rows to knit before starting thumb equals D x G = [J]
Total stitches for thumb equals 1.5 x F = [K]
Total thumb stitches to shortrow equals 1/2 of K = [L]
Total rows for one side of thumb equals D x G = [M]
Total thumb rows before shortrowing equals M-L = [N]
Total rows before tip decrease equals I-2 = [O]

In the following pattern substitute your numbers from above for the numbers before the bracketed letters.

This pattern uses a Brother Bulky 260 and Lion Brand Wool Ease yarn. Fairisle pattern from Juliet Page=s Tyrolean Knee Socks:
