AO-27 is a unique amateur satellite, because it runs in the FM mode, much like terrestrial repeaters. Since it transmits on the 70 cm. amateur band, and receives on the 2 meter amateur band, it is a satellite that can be used by amateurs with entry level licenses, like myself. It can be used with very basic equipment. Frequently, this is equipment that even a beginning amateur may already own.

    As you can see from the photograph of me standing in the snow, talking over the longer distances covered by satellite can be quite addictive. I'm using the hand-held beam antenna from the Arrow corporation, although it is not an absolute necessity for "working" AO-27.
