BSA TROOP 410

Camp Fire

Oak Level, Virginia, USA

Celebrates 37th Birthday

Boy Scout Troop 410 of Oak Level was organized in 1961. Baxter Wilson was appointed co-ordinator and Joe Satterfield appointed treasurer, positions on the troop committee that they still serve in.

Ned Henderson Sr. was elected first chairman of the board and Conway Goodman was appointed scoutmaster. About 15 years later Carter Henderson replaced his father as chairman and holds that position.

Members of the committee are Hank Terry, David Gillespie, and Roger Saunders. The grass roots leaders are asm. Joe Graves, Auten Williamson, Preston Crowder, Clark Graves and Ray Rutherford with former scoutmaster Conway Goodman moving to troop committee. Conway retired with 41 Eagle scouts on his belt. That says a lot for Conway and all the people that help support the troop.

Thanks to the people of the community and surrounding areas. They have made troop 410 one of the best troops in the United States.

The troop is sponsored by Oak Level Presbyterian Church and the Pleasant Grove Christian Church. Additional funds to operate this fast moving troop comes from Asbury Methodist Church, The Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church, Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club and all 41 Eagle Scouts that were produced by this troop. Special funding also comes from community supporters, good friends, and the boys rasing funds through stew sells, popcorn sells and the various festivals.

In 1995 the troop sent twelve scouts and leaders to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimaron New Mexicon costing approximately $10,000.00. The nine Ruritan Clubs of Halifax County and the Eagle scouts of this county helped to make this 17 day trip very successful. The troop thanks all for their support.

The troop has been to several national jamborees, Disney World, Navy, Army and Air Force, white water canoeing, rafting, repelling, backpacking, fishing, moter boating and water and snow skiing.

Boy Scouts were organized in England in 1910 by Lord Baden Powell and is now numbered in the millions.
