- BIRTH: ABT 1706, Ireland
[S58]
John Mathews' birthplace is not known. Early authors of Augusta
County, VA, histories rightly note that the upper Shenandoah Valley
was
settled almost exclusively by Scots-Irish. One genealogical
researcher
noted his birthplace as County Antrim, Ireland which may be correct,
but
no evidence was given. J.R. Boots in his 'The Ma(t)hews Family'
includes
considerable Welsh lineage going back to about 400 AD and has one
branch
of the Mathews family settling in Ulster Ireland in the 1600s. One
Mathews whose first name is unknown apparently had a son named John
who
would have been born in the era of the John who came to America. In
addition the son John was not mentioned in the father's will which
could
have been because the son had left for America.
The evidence is tenuous but tempting. The name Mathews is
certainly
of Welsh origin, but was common in England at this time. The name is
not
typical of Scotland. We do know the names of the settlers on the
Borden
Tract and there are many names which are probably Scots-Irish, but
there
are also at least one other family close to the Mathews whose name is
of
Welsh origin, i.e., Bowen. One source, Beverley Ruffin, 'Augusta
Parish,
Virginia, 1738-1780,' (Berryville, VA: Virginia Book Company, 1970),
p.
14, says that John was probably an Anglican when he settled but
provides
no evidence for this statement. If so, then John was likely of
English
or Welsh lineage but could also have come from Ireland. This writer
tends to believe that J.R. Boots is probably correct in John being of
Welsh lineage.

- EVENT: AFT 07 JUL 1725
The order of birth for the first 5 children is my evaluation based on
other data such as minority at time of will, given 5 shillings in
will, and boys being workers on roads. These first 5 may be
interchanged. Unknown birthdates are estimated by counting two years
between births. This would also place John Mathews' birth, if this
was his only marriage, about 1706.
There are two John Mathews listed in Augusta Militia in 1742
indicating that John Mathews, Jr. is the eldest son, serving in the
militia at age 16/17.

Troubles with a party of Indians, as reported by Col. Patton.
"Augusta County, Xber, 23, 1742
Honored Sir:
Thirty-sic Indians appeared in our County ye 5th instant well equipped
for War. Pretending a visit to the Catabaus, they had a letter dated
the 10th of 9ber from James Silver near Harris's ferry in Pensilvania
directed to one William Hogg a Justice o'peace desiring him to give
them a pass to travel through Virginia to their enemies, which letter
they shewed here, and it served as a pass where Silter's hand was well
known. Instead of going directly along the road they visited most of
our plantations, killing our stock, and taking provisions by force,
the 14th instant they got into Burden's land about thirty miles from
my house, the 15th Capt. McDowel by an express informed me of their
insolent behavior as also of the uneasiness of the neighbors, and
desired my directions, on which I wrote to him and Capt. John Buchanan
that the law of nature and nations obliged us to repel an enemy force
by force, but that they were to supply those Indians with provisions
which they should be paid for at the Government charge, at the same
time to attend their motions until they got fairly out of the County.
The 16, 17, and 18 instant they killed several valuable horses,
besides carrying off many of their luggage, which so exasperated our
men that they upbraided our two Captains with cowardice, nevertheless
our Captains to prevent mischief sent two men with a white flag the
19th instant, desiring peace and friendship, to which they answered "O
Friends are you their, have we found you" and on that fired on our
flag, killed Capt. McDowell and six more of our men, on which Capt.
Buchanan gave the word of command and bravely returned ye compliment,
and stood his ground with a very few hands, (for our men were not all
come up) in 45 minutes the Indians fled, leaving eight of our men dead
on the spot, amongst whom were two of our Captains. Our Captain
pursued with only eight men several hundred yards, the enemy getting
into a thicket, he returned to the field where he could not by any
means prevail on his men to keep and stand by him. The night before
the engagement, I heard of the Indians behavior, and marched up
with-three men, and met our Captain returning 14 miles distance from
where they had engaged to which place I went next day and brought off
our dead, being eight in number, Capt. Buchanan having taken off ye
wounded the day before. I have ordered our Patrowlers on all
frontiers well equipped, and drafted out a certain number of Young men
out of each company to be in readiness to reinforce any party or place
that first needs help, having ordered the Captains to guard their
ownprecincts have appointed places and rendezvous where each neighbor
may draw to our occasion, and have called in the stragling families
that live at a distance.
We have certain news of one hundred and fifty Indians seen seventy
miles above me, and about the same number lately crost Patowmack on
their way up here.
A few medicines for our wounded would be very acceptable, I am,
James Patton."
