Declaration
In order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th
1832 State of Missouri, County of Ray On this fifth day of
August in the year of 1833 personally appeares the undersigned
Littleton West a resident of said County and the state aged about 78
years who being first duly sworn, according to Law doth on his oath
make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of the
Provision made by the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832, That
sometime in the Year of 1774 he volunteered as a Private Militia man
under Captain Benjamin Harriss(?) of Greenbrier County in the state of
Virginia where I then ???ed for the defence of the North west(?)
frontier which was annoyed by the attacks of????? Indians that we
marched with a force of 100 men under the command of Colonial Captain
Ben Harriss for Point Pleasant on the Ohio River near the mouth of the
Kenhawa(sic) river we arrived with many of our men sick of the flus. I
was detailed to wait on the sick and did not reach the point until
after the Battle was fought with the Indians at Point Pleasant I
cannot recollect the name of the Regiment I belonged to and the
following officers are all that I recollect being in this Expedition
??????? Service of Virginia I belive the said expedition was ordered
out by the Governor of Virginia and I also believe it had his sanction
I returned home to Greenbrier County

in the state of Virginia the troops(?) were(?) discharged tour tour of
service in this campaign three months about the year 1779 or 1780 as I
think I volunteered under Capt H????? Wright of Greenbrier County in
the state of Virginia (?in which County I state lived?) with a body of
Militia ordered out by the authority of Virginia We marched from
Greenbrier County in the said state under the command of T(?).
Wright with about 30
men to B???????? fort on the Frontier of said county of Greenbrier in
said state where we were stationed for protecting the frontier
settlements we were in active service this tour 30 days & was
discharged and I returned to my residence in Greenbrier Virginia On
and in or about the year of 1782 I again volunteered under the same
Capt Wright and marched to the relief of Doneleys (Donnally's) fort on
the fron tiers of Greenbrier with a force of about 45 men commanded by
said(?) Capt Wright whits(?) at this fort the Shawnee Indians made
attacks on the fort and killed 4 men we however repulsed them with
several killed & wounded having ended our tour we were discharged I
returned home to Greenbreir my place of residence having served in
this tour 30 days.
About as well as I can recollect a requisition(?) was made by the
Governor of Virginia for troops to aid the settlements now Kentucky
who were much distressed by the Indians I was drafted in this

campaign but owing to my situation being lately(?) married I could not
go with the troops I procured a substitute by name of Joshua
Boucher(?) to whom I paid fifty dollars to take my place for three
months which he done I have been on other campaigns against the
Indians which I cannot now by reason of my old age and consequent laps
of memory detail to my person I have no documents or evidence of the
aforesaid narrative nor do I know of any person now living that can
certify to my service I have?? all the tours put together the fill
space of eight months I cannot say on what year it happened and during
that time I was not engaged in any civil pursuit By reason of the laps
of my memory and the C??? great(?) mission(?) of foot(?) growing
therefrom I make the following affidavit
State of Missouri, ss(?). Personally appeared before me County of Ray
Mo. The undersigned Justice of the peace within and for said County
and the state Littleton West who being duly sworn de????? and????? and
that by reason of Old Age and the consequence Laps of memory, he
cannot swear positively to the precise length of his service but
according to the best of his recollection he served not Less than the
periods mentioned below and in the following grade to last for the
space of five months I served as a private soldier and for the space
of these months I served by hiring a substitute which cost me fifty
dolls. (dollars) and for such service I claim a pension

1833 and I do further state that I believe Littleton West who makes
this affidavit before me to me a man of truth and credit State of

is attached(?) and ???? which the????? undersigned(?) is a Justice of
the Peace duly corn missioned and the signature annexed(?) is his

1 where and in what state were you(?) born? Ansr. in the County of
Sussex in the state of Dela ware on the 26th Nov 1755 AD 2 Have you
any record of your age and and if so where is it? Ansr. I have none I
Remember to have been written down in a Bible at an age when I had a
distant recollection of it and the book containing it was burned with
my house in the County of Green briar in the state of Virginia. 3.
Where were you living when called into service where have you lived
since the Revolutionary War, and where do you now live. Ansr. in the
state of Virginia, when called into service, since in that state and
Kentucky and I do now live in Ray County State of Missouri 4. How were
you called into service, were drafted, did you volunteer, or were you
a substitute and if a sub stitute for whom~ Ansr. I was a volunteer
for 5 months and drafted for 3 months I paid to a substitute who went
in my place the latter(?) term(?) 50 dollars. Interrogator state the
names of the Regular officers who were with the troops where you
served, such conti nental and Militia Regiments as you can recollect
and the General Circumstances of your service? Ansr. I cannot
recollect in consequence of old age and laps of memory. 6- did you
ever receive a discharge from the service and if so by whom was it
given, and what has become of it? Ansr. I received none that I
recollect

7. State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present
neighborhood, and who can testily as to your character for veracity,
and their belief of your services as a soldier of the Revolution?
Answer I am known to James Dowden(?) and William Tunnidge who can
testily to my character for veracity and their belief of my services
as a soldier in the Revo lution. whereupon the said James Dowden(?)
and William Tunnidge came here into open court and on their oaths
did say that they do testily to the said declarants charactor for
veracity is not doubt ed, and we believe he served in the
Revolutionary War as he states.

and the said Court here do Certify that William Tunnidge is a
clergyman, that he signed the same in Court in our presence and that
he and James Dowden are men of truth and their character for veracity
